LDF to move SC against UDF leader for violating prison laws

The SC,earlier this year, had sentenced Pillai to undergo one-year imprisonment in a corruption case

The CPM-led Left Democratic Front on Wednesday decided to move the Supreme Court against senior UDF leader R Balakrishna Pillai, alleging that he had violated the prison laws. The SC,earlier this year, had sentenced Pillai to undergo one-year imprisonment in a corruption case.

LDF convener Vaikkom Vishwan told the media that Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan would approach the SC on behalf of the front. Pillai, now staying in a private hospital on health grounds, had landed in a major controversy after he called several persons, including senior government officials and his close aides,in violation of the prison regulations. Ever since he was jailed,Pillai had managed to remain out of the prison on various excuses. After the Congress came to power in May,Pillai got his parole extended and later moved to a private hospital under the guise of treatment.

Vishwan said an LDF delegation would also petition Governor M O H Farook, saying how Pillai and the UDF government had been challenging the court verdict by staying in a private hospital, from where he had been allegedly meddling in government affairs. The government cannot run away from the responsibility for “subverting’’ the Supreme Court verdict as Pillai’s son K B Ganesh Kumar is also a Cabinet member, said the CPM leader.
