Leaders pay rich tribute to young Yavatmal MLA who died in road mishap

The tragic accidental death of Nilesh Parvekar, young Congress MLA from Yavatmal who was a recognised member of 'Rahul Brigade', is being seen as a setback to not only Yavatmal but entire Vidarbha.

Parvekar (42) died in a road accident Sunday near Ladkhed village while returning to Yavatmal. He was driving a Toyota Fortrunner that overturned at a turn around 9.30 pm. He is survived by mother, wife and two daughters.

Thousands attended the last rites in Yavatmal Monday. Leaders of all political parties, including chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and state Congress chief Manikrao Thakre, who also hails from Yavatmal, paid rich tributes.

NCP president Sharad Pawar, who was touring the region, visited the family, so did state BJP president Sudhir Mungantiwar.

An engineer by training, Nilesh was son of Congress leader and MLA of yesteryear Balasaheb Parvekar. A first-time MLA, he was chosen by none other than Rahul Gandhi to contest from Yavatmal on a Congress ticket in 2009. He defeated powerful BJP leader Madan Yerawar by over 20,000 votes. His uncle Abaseheb Parvekar was also a Congress MLA.

Parvekar started as Ghatanji panchayat samiti chairman at the age of 25. He later became director of Maharashtra State Housing Corporation before getting a Congress ticket from Rahul Gandhi quota. He was among the very close confidants of Chavan and among those sent by Congress to study the recent US presidential election.

Chavan said, "The real tribute to Parvekar would be for all of us to strive to fulfill his dream of Yavatmal's development by burying differences." Deputy CM Ajit Pawar described Parvekar's death as "loss of youth leadership that can never be recouped."
