Taking early warning lessons from the tragedies in Japan,Himachal Pradesh,which falls in a critical seismic zone,has got into serious business to formulate disaster management plans at district levels.

At the end of the two-day training workshop for the senior level officers,including principal secretaries,heads of various departments and nodal officers of disaster management,the government apprised them of some harsh realities.

Chief Secretary Rajwant Sandhu addressed the officials at the last session. She said,“during the last 100 years,Himachal Pradesh has been rocked by as many as 49 earthquakes having magnitude of more than 5 on Richter scale. This makes for greater urgency to prepare the plans and keep trainings modules updated”.

She also referred to disasters like cloud bursts,landslides and flash floods,wherein the biggest problem which state agencies face is restoration of the life-line,that is roads repeatedly damaged,blocked or washed away .

The workshop was organized by the State Council for Science Technology and Environment in association with the department of revenue.

Dr Amir Ali Khan,Director,National Institute of Disaster Management,Delhi gave a comprehensive presentation on the national and the state scenario and disasters threats. He stressed on the need for a concrete policy for prevention,preparedness,early warring system,community awareness etc,that could minimise the impact of disasters.
