Left,ADMK,JD(S) rally together for place in JPC

With the deadlock in Parliament over the demand for a JPC probe into 2G spectrum scam broken, smaller parties in Lok Sabha have begun efforts to secure a nomination in the proposed panel.

While there is no clarity on the strength of the proposed committee,a group of nine smaller parties led by the Left has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar urging her to consider them as a bloc. These parties would have found it difficult to find a place in the JPC on the basis of their individual strength. Among them, the nine parties have 61 members in Lok Sabha.

“We are asking for a wide representation in the proposed JPC. The four Left parties along with the AIADMK,JD(S),BJD,TDP and RLD have 61 members and our demand is that we should be considered as a single entity,” CPM leader Basudev Acharia told The Indian Express. Sources said the prime reason for the letter was to ensure that the AIADMK gets a nomination in the JPC.

According to sources, there is friction among the CPM and CPI — the main constituents of the Left bloc — regarding membership in the JPC.

Leaders of the NDA,meanwhile, met to draw up the alliance’s strategy in Parliament. While deciding to allow the House to function smoothly after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s expected announcement on Tuesday to form the JPC,the Opposition alliance resolved to keep the heat on the UPA by raising other issues of corruption during the session.

After the NDA meeting, convener Sharad Yadav said the alliance would allow Parliament to function smoothly and has demanded meaningful discussions on issues like irregularities in organising of the Commonwealth Games,Adarsh Housing Society scam, price rise, black money to “expose” the government.

“There will be a JPC on 2G spectrum allocation. Apart from that, other issues of corruption will be discussed in the House. We are not demanding JPC on other issues. We have accepted JPC on 2G spectrum,” Deputy Leader of BJP in Rajya Sabha S S Ahluwalia said.
