Accusing the UPA Government of jettisoning the monsoon session of Parliament, leaders of the Left, BSP, TDP and JD(S) on Tuesday knocked on the doors of President Pratibha Patil seeking her intervention for immediate convening of Parliament to discuss issues like the Indo-US nuclear deal.
However, leaders of Om Prakash Chautala’s INLD, Ajit Singh’s RLD and other UNPA constituents like AGP and Babulal Marandi’s JVM stayed away from the delegation, once again bringing to the fore cracks in the coalition.
While the INLD is seriously engaged in talks with the BJP to sew up an alliance in Haryana for the next Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, AGP has almost tied up with the saffron party in Assam. Ajit Singh, agitated over Mayawati’s decision to contest all the seats in UP, is undecided on his future course of action.
The leaders submitted a memorandum to the President saying the government’s decision to jettison the monsoon session is a deliberate manipulation of established traditions concerning the sessions of Parliament. “A series of reports have appeared suggesting that the assurances made by the PM to Parliament and the country on the nuclear deal have been violated. Worse, there are reports that crucial information on the deal was concealed. These are serious matters concerning the sovereignty and security of India and its independent foreign policy. Parliament, therefore the people, are being deprived of their fundamental right to make the government accountable and answerable on these matters,” they said.
