Left Front accuses TMC govt of targeting its constituents

"TMC is taking its revenge on the Left parties," said Prakash Karat.

The Left Front on Friday accused Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal of targeting its constituents and threatened to organize secular and democratic parties against the alleged atrocities of the TMC-led government in the state.

“Since the day Trinamool Congress won in Bengal,Left party workers and leaders are being attacked there. Till July 5,24 members of different Left parties have been killed,” said CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat.

Addressing a gathering of supporters of CPI,CPI(M),RSP and Forward Bloc,Karat said,“TMC is taking its revenge on the Left parties. Four women supporters have been raped but the state government has not done anything to control the situation.”

The gathering, which was attended by senior leaders of the four parties, demanded immediate action by the state government to ensure safety and security of the Left supporters in the state.

“So far more than 500 offices in different parts of West Bengal have been attacked. Student and trade union leaders are being threatened and attacked,” Karat said.

Calling it an attack on democratic system in the country,Karat said the Left parties would not be intimidated by these attacks.

“We will try to organize all the secular and democratic parties against the atrocities committed by West Bengal government. We will also raise the issue in the Parliament,” said Karat.

He also accused the TMC-led government of using the Maoists cadre against CPI(M) supporters in districts of Bankura,Hoogli,Burdwan and West Midnapur. Addressing the gathering,CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan accused Banerjee of supporting the policies of UPA which has been facing charges of corruption.

“Mamta Banerjee has two faces, one as the Chief Minister of West Bengal and the other one as the biggest coalition partner of UPA government which is behind the increasing prices and attacks on tribals,” he said.

On the outcome of Kerala elections where the Left lost to the Congress-led UDF alliance,Bardhan said,“We were a little careless that we lost four seats with a small margin in Kerala. While criticizing the Left for its defeat, people must question the performance of Congress party in Tamil Nadu,Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.”
