Alleging that the “callous” decision of UPA government to increase fuel charges has led to price rise,Left parties decided to launch a nationwide campaign against “unbearable” hike in prices of essential commodities.
“The increase in the prices of essential commodities, particularly of food items, has become unbearable for the people. The prices of all pulses have shot up to such an extent, with some varieties priced between Rs 80 and 100 per kg,that the common people cannot afford them any more,” leader of four Left parties said in a statement.
Claiming that fuel price rise resulted in increase in prices of essential commodities, they said,”The price rise has been fuelled by the callous decision of the UPA government to increase the prices of petrol and diesel. The prospects of drought in many states due to deficient monsoon will further put pressure on the prices of food items.”
The statement was signed by CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat and his counterparts in CPI (A B Bardhan),RSP (T J Chandrachoodan) and Forward Bloc (Debabrata Biswas). While Left MPs would stage a protest in Parliament House precincts on Tuesday, the nationwide agitation would be held in the first week of August,CPI leader D Raja said.
