Despite the CAG rap on Delhi government for faulty design of the BRT project, the Union Urban Development Ministry came out in support of it saying the total number of accidents on the stretch has come down after construction of the corridor.
“Government of NCT of Delhi has informed that though a few accidents have taken place, the total number of accidents on the stretch has come down after the construction of BRT due to segregation of traffic,” Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken told Rajya Sabha.
Quoting a study by consultant DIMTS,he said cyclists, pedestrians and bus users have praised the corridor and advocated its replication in other areas of the city.
“A socio economic study on the corridor was carried out by DIMTS to asses the impact of the BRT corridor. The pedestrians, cyclists and bus users have praised the corridor and strongly advocated its replication to encourage use of Non Motorised Vehicles and public transport,” he said.
The minister said significant reduction in travel time for buses has been observed and accidents have also come down on the corridor due to segregation.
He,however, admitted that some shortcomings have been identified and corrective measures like construction of foot over bridges, construction of link road and intelligent transport system are being initiated.
