Quest is a project conducted by The Indian Express in schools in and around Delhi. Often in our day to day lives,we get so busy that we forget to remember who we are and where we are heading, most importantly who made us what we are today. On the teachers day, students tell us about their relation with their teacher, about the bond that connects them with their teacher.
As Henry Adams has said:- A teacher affects eternity,no one can tell where his influence stops. We arrive on this earth because of our parents and on the stage of the world because of our teachers. It is this bond which helps us grow and blossom. What is this bond? Why is it so strong? That is because when a parent throws his hands up in the air to explain a concept,I visualise the calm face of my teacher. The repeated assurances of you can do it,the caring touch, the firm grip is none other than that of my teachers. My teacher listens to me,he hears our voices and helps every child become his most magnificent self. His words of encouragement, his belief in me teaches me the lessons of life. First I need to be a survivor, learn to laugh, and learn to pick myself up when I fall,to dance to my own rhythm,to love nature, create and never to stop learning. This is the bond that I share with my mentor,my guide and my teacher.

One day, when we have achieved our goals and are settled in life,we think of all those because of whom we have come this far. We think of our parents, our friends, our bosses, etc. But between all of them we realise that one person holds a value very different from others in our life. Thats our teacher. We are thankful to all of them, but not to our teachers; instead we hold them in deep respect. A student always has the curiosity to know what he does not know. And the teacher would always want to quench his pupils thirst. And this is why students give the utmost respect to this person. The teacher actually moulds their lives. Ethically,a teacher doesnt profit when they give all they have to their students. This is an act of selflessness and I value this. We give this mentor a very different position in our lives That position, that respect is the bond between the teacher and a student.

On the first day of school, when my mother handed me over to my teacher,I was terrified. I remember wanting to go and hold the safe and comforting hands of my mother. I ran around frantically searching for those hands. I did not find them. Instead,my teacher held my hands. The student-teacher relationship has always been very special. The trust that a student and a teacher share is something very extraordinary. Teachers have been the eyes to a new world and a source of knowledge for us students. They have always been a mentor,a guide and, most importantly,a friend. Every year we thank our teachers, but do we really mean it? On this occasion of Teachers Day,I would like to thank all my teachers for being there for me and most importantly for being who they are.

I went to school at the age of three. For the first few days I did not cry. There was some thing, some kind of magic there, that attracted me my teachers. But after a few days,I cried. I cried in the morning and again the next morning. The reason was that I wanted to go to school and I was not allowed as that was the weekend. My little mind would not understand why my mother went to office on Saturday and I could not go to school. I understood it when my teacher explained it. I went to a school in the USA when I was 10 years old. Here the students looked different, behaved and I was lost. The only similarity that this school had to my school in India was the love and affection showered by the teachers. Now as an adolescent,I am grappling with thousands of questions about myself,my friends,my future and as well as fighting peer pressure. Once again,I have found a teacher who has turned out to be my friend,my counsellor,my biggest support.

A Teacher for All Seasons
A teacher is like Spring,
Who nurtures new green sprouts,
Encourages and leads them,
Whenever they have doubts.
A teacher is like Summer,
Whose sunny temperament
Makes studying a pleasure,
Preventing discontent.
A teacher is like Fall,
With methods crisp and clear,
Lessons of bright colours
And a happy atmosphere.
A teacher is like Winter,
While its snowing hard outside,
Keeping students comfortable,
As a warm and helpful guide.
Teacher,you do all these things,
With a pleasant attitude;
Youre a teacher for all seasons,
And you have my gratitude

Builders construct buildings, bureaucrats look after the administration, scientists invent but teachers they build ideal human beings. The guru-shishya relation is integral to our countrys tradition. We are a part of a heritage where gurus are next to gods, who dispel the darkness of ignorance with knowledge. The strength of this relation emerges from the trust the student places in their teacher and the gift of knowledge that the teacher bestows on the student. When children walk into a school they completely place their trust on their teachers and the teacher holds their tiny fingers and guides them through their school life. This relationship with their teachers is nurtured through their school years and it rows like a peepal tree, which provides shade to the teacher and student in their bond of trust. The students gratitude toward their teachers and their teachers affection for them makes this relationship eternal.

The difference between a man and a beast is that man is educated. An illiterate person is similar to a beast. This was a famous saying by the worlds great mathematician,Pythagoras. But who gives a man education? What is the relation between the students and the teachers? Earlier, there were gurukuls and the pupils had to stay with their guru for education. Teachers are like our parents. They are always given a high rank, just like parents. Teachers are the best friends of a child. They educate us and show us the right way to success. They are the ones who teach us and encourage us to do the right thing. They help us excel in many fields. If we want to succeed,we would have to work hard and practise. But practice without understanding is of no use. So,our teachers are behind every happiness of ours. It is a teacher who moulds us and converts us into a good human being.

The teacher is a guide and a student is a follower and the path shown by the teacher takes the student to success. This relationship is one of trust and mutual understanding. They both respect each other. The students know why the teacher is sometimes harsh with them. They acknowledge the fact that one has to work hard. The teacher has to be patient and support their students and push them hard to bring out the best in them. After the parents,it is the teacher who works in the interest of a child and works tirelessly to give their best to the child. Students never forget their teachers; sometimes even a small remark from a teacher makes them aware of their goals in life. Their relationship is very strong. The students worship their teachers and think of them as god. This wonderful never-ending relationship is a wine, which tastes sweeter and sweeter as it matures and ages.
