Two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants, including 'divisional commander' Muzamil Amin Dar who was allegedly involved in a terror plot to target Delhi in February, were killed in an encounter in Sopore that began on Saturday evening and lasted for over 20 hours. Three security personnel were injured in the shootout.

"Two LeT militants were killed in a joint operation of the police and Army at Sopore," said a police spokesman. "The slain militants were identified as Lashkar's divisional commander Muzamil Amin Dar alias Urfi, who was involved in the Delhi blast conspiracy, and Abdullah Shaheen, believed to be a Pakistani," he said.

A resident of Sopore, Muzamil's name came up after the arrest of two Sopore youths — Ahtesham Malik and Tauseef Ahmad Pir — from the New Delhi railway station in February this year for allegedly planning bomb blasts in the capital. Delhi Police claimed to have recovered explosives, memory cards, five mobile phones and passports from their possession.

Although Muzamil was already on the police radar for his alleged links with Lashkar militants, he went underground soon after Malik and Pir were arrested. Police sources said it was Muzamil who had motivated Malik to return to the LeT fold and had also asked him to apply for a Pakistani visa.

A science graduate, Muzamil worked as a medical representative till he went missing. In 2010, he and his father were arrested for allegedly supporting militants. Police claimed they even recovered arms and ammunition from their home.

On Saturday evening, a joint team of J&K Police, Army's 22 Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF cordoned the Shalapora neighbourhood of Sopore after they received specific inputs about Muzamil's presence in the area.
