John Abraham and Katrina Kaif in New York,Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor with Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richards in Kambakkht Ishq,Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone in Love Aaj Kal… take your pick as all the big starrers that were waiting in the pipeline for the multiplex strike to end gush onto the screen one after another in the coming weeks. “We want people to come out and watch more than three films a week,” says Amit Awasthi,manager,Spice cinemas,Noida.

First off the mark is New York on June 26,a fast-paced thriller in which three students,played by Abraham,Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh,find their lives thrown in a tizzy following the collapse of the World Trade Centre. Inox expects a rush of enquiries for the film and are braced for it. June 26 is the day they say the bad spell of the past two months will end. “New York will be a major crowd puller. We may end up alloting 8 shows per day to it,” says a relieved Virendra Maurya,regional director (east),Inox.

On July 3,the hyped Kambakkht Ishq hits the screens. “The timing is perfect. The T20 matches will be over by the end of June and then Kambakkht Ishq a wonderful starcast. We expect it to draw huge crowds,” says a spokesperson of Fame,Kolkata . The Sabbir Khan-directed Kambakkht Ishq has been in the news ever since Stallone and Richards agreed to put in an appearance. “With major Hollywood stars in the film,it has the potential to create a major impact among the audience,” adds the spokesperson.

Next comes the line-up of Bollywood hunks of two generations — Luck,starring Imran Khan,Sanjay Dutt,Mithun Chakraborty and Danny Denzongpa. And this is the chance to decide whether newbie Shruti Haasan has inherited father Kamal Haasan’s genes. “Though schools and colleges will have opened by July 24,when Luck releases,we expect packed halls,” says a distributor. There is also excitement surrounding Love Aaj Kal,a film that marks Saif Ali Khan’s debut as a film producer. Releasing on July 31,it is a love affair that cuts across two generations. Gazing further into the crystal ball,distributors talk about Kaminey,which releases on August 14,and boasts Shahid Kapur’s pairing with Priyanka Chopra,Pyaar Impossible,with Priyanka Chopra and Uday Chopra,and the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Rocket Singh.

But the party begins with New York,reminds Gaurav Paul,director,PP Associates,which is distributing 125 prints of the Yash Raj film in the NCR. “The first week will be very crucial,” he says. “We have one week before schools open to attract as many people as possible to the theatres for the film to be a hit.”
