Private transmission

Apropos of the news story "Power transmission: Rising private interest" (FE, July 25), increased private sector interest in the power transmission sector is a good move. It is a fact that maximum power loss—from generation to usage—happens during transmission. The current transmission grid, at many places, is quite old and is completely owned by either Power Grid or state utilities. If we can have private ownership, such equipment can be monitored and updated regularly to keep the transmission losses minimal. Also, the entry of private players will mean we can see newer technologies in the transmission sector. Moreover, private participation will also ensure overall operational efficiency.
