  • Anil Basu had allegedly used disparaging language against the Trinamool chief

CPM Hooghly district committee leader and former MP Anil Basu, who made disparaging remarks about Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, today came under severe criticism from his own partymen who said he had transgressed all limits of decency.

At a press conference held on October 25 at Hooghly, the former MP reportedly declared that had Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee not restrained them during Mamata’s dharna at Singur, he would have caught her by the hair and sent her back to her residence at Kalighat. He also allegedly said all of Mamata’s wits have come to her belly that was becoming bigger by the day.

Basu’s comments evoked sharp reactions not only from the Trinamool Congress and the Congress, but also from the Left Front ministers, who slammed Basu today.

The sharpest criticism came from Minister for Land and Land Reforms Abdur Rezaq Mollah.

“The comments are not only unfortunate but obnoxious. How can a politician make such an indecent remark about another? It shows his education, culture and grooming. In fact, it shows how power goes to the head of somebody,” Mollah said.

Mamata had yesterday described Basu as a black sheep in politics. State Congress working president Subrata Mukherjee described the former MP as mentally unbalanced and demanded that he apologise.

Another CPM minister, Anisur Rahman, who is in charge of panchayat and rural development, said in politics, one should be respectful to others while making any comment. “I have not heard what Basu said, but no politician should use politically incorrect language about others.”
