  • The Liberhan Commission report on the Babri mosque demolition has claimed its first causality in Uttar Pradesh, with the Samajwadi Party deciding not to field Rajvir Singh, son of the former BJP leader Kalyan Singh, as its nominee for the Ferozabad Lok Sabha by-poll.

Rajvir is a national general secretary of the Samajwadi Party.

The by-poll has been necessitated in Ferozabad after Akhilesh Yadav of the SP, who was elected in the recent Lok Sabha polls, vacated the seat to retain Kannauj, the second seat he won.

“Hell will break loose if we even propose to nominate Rajvir Singh as our nominee, but nobody speaks about the prominent Congress leaders in the then P V Narasimha Rao government still enjoying important positions in the UPA government,” said Mohan Singh, one of the SP’s national general secretaries.

Defending Kalyan, the SP leader said, “Why should he be singled out when Congress leaders who were part of the then Narasimha Rao government are still occupying high positions.”

The SP is likely to field its trusted war horse Ramji Lal Suman, who was elected from the Ferozabad (SC) seat in 2004. contested the 2009 Lok Sabha poll from the neighbouring Agra but was defeated by the BJP candidate.
