  • After a rumour campaign around troop movements and hoax calls, the latest subject of speculation in Pakistani media is FBI investigators reaching to investigate Mumbai attacks. Facts first — the FBI has not yet reached Pakistan, with the government there still not ensuring them full access to purportedly arrested Lashkar-e-Toiba operatives. Despite this, media reports emerged from almost nowhere that an FBI team had visited arrested terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab’s village and found nothing. Stunned Indian officials sought clarifications from the US and were told the news was completely baseless. It transpires that these reports were sourced from Washington-based Pakistani journalists, making it even more intriguing to US authorities. Media leaks on Zarar Shah’s alleged confession, it is believed, were aimed at conveying that Pakistan was indeed investigating the case on its own and so, the FBI need not land up just yet. However, pressure is building on the pro-Pakistan lobby in the US that the FBI cannot ignore the case as it is mandated by domestic law to investigate every lead in a case where American citizens have been killed. On this count, the proposed visit of Richard Boucher, a known supporter of strengthening the Asif Zardari regime, to the region in the next few days will be watched closely.
