Two persons were killed and road and railway traffic were affected in some parts of Saurashtra following cyclonic rain that lashed the region on Sunday night.
Rajkot, Jamnagar, Junagadh and Amreli experienced rain with thunderstorms and strong winds last evening till night, the Met Department said on Monday, adding that these cities received rainfall up to 75 mm in three hours.
Two persons were killed when lightning struck them at Singsar in Junagadh district on Sunday evening, the police said. The victims have been identified as Bhana Rama Chudasama (35) and Jodha Meraman Koli (40).
The stormy weather created panic among people in the cities. Hailstorms whiplashed Amarapar and Maliya Hatina towns. Many trees were uprooted and hoardings and signboards were blown away. People of Rajkot faced blackout for nearly one-and-a-half-an-hour as the Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL), as a preventive measure, cut off power supply to avoid any major casualties.
Road and rail traffic were also affected as uprooted trees blocked roads and railway track. But there was no report of any long route train running behind schedule, Railway authorities said.
They added that only an inter-city train was running behind an hour to its schedule. There was no any major casualty, the police said.
Woman dies as house collapses in Bharuch
Bharuch: A woman was killed and four others injured when a shanty collapsed in the Vejalpur area due to gusty winds and rainfall, the police said. Laxmiben Vasava (42) was killed when her hut collapsed due to strong winds on Sunday night, while four others were injured in the incident.
