Candidates to rope in film and TV personalities for campaign

Anticipating a tough battle, the contestants in Pune Lok Sabha seat are working overtime to rope in film and TV personalities for campaign.

“We have begun contacting film personalities. A list of personalities, particularly film stars, television actors and sportspersons, has been prepared for the campaign. Invitations are being sent to them, but it is not clear how many will be able to turn up,” a Congress leader said.

The Congress plans to rope in the likes of Rajesh Khanna, Hritesh Deshmukh, Mahima Chaudhari and Nagma along with a few personalities from the television industry.

“Kalmadi is well-known in the sports field as well. So, we are hoping some sports personalities will also campaign for him,” Congress leaders said.

The BJP has planned road shows of film and TV personalities to support Anil Shirole.

“Film and TV personalities with no political background do not make a difference in the elections. The Congress has been doing it, but will not succeed,” city BJP vice-president Sandeep Khardekar said.

The BJP will also bring in personalities for campaign, but all of them will be party members. Those likely to campaign for the party include Hema Malini and Smriti Irani.

The BSP is toeing the same line.

Meanwhile, the MNS believes famous personalities will add to the credibility of a candidate. “The film and TV personalities do make a difference. Their campaign helps in attracting voters,” MNS leader Ravindra Dhangekar said.
