Linemen protest: Among jailed 2 children with mothers

A day after they were lathicharged for protesting at the venue of SAD conference at ongoing Maghi Mela at least 59 members of the Unemployed Linemen Union, including 24 women — two of them had their children with them — were sent to Faridkot Jail till January 28.

All of them were booked under sections 332, 353, 186 and 107 of IPC as they blocked a road after being pushed out of the conference venue.

President of the Union, Tirmal Singh, alleged that one of the protesting woman, Paramjit Kaur, was sent to jail alongwith her one-and-a-half year old son, one Amandeep Kaur has also been put behind bars with her husband and their five-year-old daughter. Even Tirmal's mother Ranjit Kaur is in jail.

"We will continue with our protests. This is how the government has responded to our demands," Tirmal said.

SSP Surjit Singh could not be contacted for his comments.

The Union members claim that that in January 2011, the state government had floated posts of 5000 linemen on lumpsum Rs 10,000 salary. But after completing all formalities, the state issued appointment letters only to 1,000 linemen.
