With just a day to go for the liquor contractors to clear their old stocks,it is liquor bonhomie all over the town. The Department of Excise, which is raiding vends all over the city is asking vend owners to bring down banners promoting sale of liquor and even challaning them.
At the time of filing of this report, over six vends had been challaned. Liqour vend owners have put up boards and hoardings outside their outlets, announcing the slashed prices of various brands. Promoting sale of liquor through banners is against the law and we are trying to check this, said Parampal Singh and officer of the department.
We have about 200 liqour vends and we have formed three teams which are conducting raids in the city, said Singh admitting that the exercise may not bear much fruit.
Since some of the vend owners did not get new vends, they have time till Wednesday to clear their stocks. We can not cancel their license for it is valid till March 31. But we will do our duty and ask them to bring down the banners, he said.
While duty is paid on liquor, advertisement of liquor brands is not allowed and even the vend owners can not do so he adds.
With the rush finally making a bee line for these vends, the owners say they will be able to clear some of their stocks. One such vendor, who has a huge stock lying and does not want to be identified said,I have no option. This stock is of no use after tomorrow. I can get challaned but will handle that later. For now I have asked my men on the counter to see that they clear as much stock as they can in these two days. We are just thinking about this now and nothing more.
