In view of the harmful effects of pesticides on children, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has proposed to the Union Labour Ministry to include agriculture in the list of hazardous occupations, where those below 18 years are strictly prohibited.
Earlier this year, the Labour Ministry had notified an expansion of the list of hazardous occupations, but had not included agriculture in the revised list.
“While, it is debated that agriculture provides traditional skill, it is also important in the interest of children to keep them out of it,” said Sandhya Bajaj, member, NCPCR.
