Even though the King Edward Memorial(KEM) Hospital announced its subsidised liver transplant programme, nearly a month ago,the hospital is yet to send an application for licence to the State Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC).

Sujata Astekar,ZTCC spokesperson, confirmed that the KEM was still not registered in the list. “Kidney transplants are being conducted in the hospital, but liver transplants are still to take off,” she said.

Dr Avinash Supe, head of KEM’s Gastrointestinal(GI) Surgery Department, said, the application requesting permission is yet to be sent to ZTCC. “We will be sending the application soon,”he said.

While sources in the GI department said about 30 patients with severe liver diseases have already been registered at KEM for transplant,Dean Dr Sanjay Oak said,“technical processes” were the reason for thedelay.

After processing the application, the ZTCC usually takes two to three months for inspection before granting permission for transplants. Earlier this month,Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray had inaugurated two swanky Intensive Care Units equipped with the latest technical facilities for the transplant wing at KEM.

The first 10 patients to be treated were also promised free treatment.
