With the conclusion of the budget session of the state legislature, the Congress leaders are looking forward to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan to expand his Council of Ministers. The Chavan Cabinet had assumed office in November last year with 38 ministers — 18 from the Congress and 20 from the NCP.

As per the powersharing formula, the Congress had 23 ministerial berths and NCP 20. The Congress had kept five seats vacant, saying they would be filled in due course.

Sources said Chavan had got an approval from the party high command to fill the vacancies. “Our information is that by the second week of May,the Cabinet will be expanded,” a senior Congress leader said. “The Chief Minister may not fill all vacancies… Three ministers are likely to be inducted.”

The contenders include state Congress chief Manikrao Thakre,Mumbai Congress chief Kripashankar Singh and former Chief Minister Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar. The children of influential Congress leaders are also hoping to get inducted in the Council of Ministers. They include Rajendra Shekhawat,Praniti Shinde,Amit Deshmukh,Dilip Deshmukh and Pankaj Bhujbal. Revenue Minister Narayan Rane’s camp is hoping that one of his supporters (Kalidas Kolambkar,Manikrao Kokate or Vinayak Nimhan) will be accommodated. Former minister Chandrakant Handore, who was dropped from the Cabinet,is also among the contenders.
