Lohri celebrated in city schools and colleges

  • Lohri was celebrated at Sat Paul Mittal School with a lot of exuberance and fanfare. The mood on the campus was upbeat and the students were totally absorbed in the festive spirit of Lohri. The function started with speeches in English and Punjabi highlighting the importance of the festival of Lohri, which ushers in the cheerful spring season bidding adieu to the dull winter.

    The students and teachers sang songs immersed in rich cultural folklore of Punjab. A kite-flying competition was also organised, which was throughly enjoyed by the students. Lt Col Dr DB Sharma greeted the Satyans and encouraged them to value their cultural heritage.

    Today, in Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Sector 39, the festivals of Lohri and Makarsakranti were celebrated with great pomp and show. All the students and teachers took part in the celebrations enthusiastically. The programme kicked off with “Lohri Poojan.” Principal Ranjit Kaur along with all other teachers worshipped ‘Dhooni’ and groundnuts and sweets were also distributed among the students. A colourful programme was held on this occasion, in which tiny tots of ‘Shishu Vatika’ presented poems and dances while ther students presented Punjabi ‘Boliyaan’, Punjabi folk songs, Lohri songs and poems.

    Lohri is the harvest festival of Punjab, famously known as the bread-basket state of India. Thus, people residing in Punjab attach a great significance to Lohri, the festival of feasts and foods. This harvest festival is celebrated to mark both celebration and sharing.

    Lohri festival prompts people to be thankful for God’s provisions and to celebrate his creations, its focus on farming.
