Lok Sabha to discuss price rise on Wednesday under rule entailing voting

The resolution is likely to spell out immediate and effective steps to check inflation.

After two days of disruption,Parliament is expected to function normally tomorrow with the government and Opposition today reaching a compromise of taking up a debate on prise rise under rules that entail voting.

Under the agreement reached after a few rounds of talks,the discussion will be taken up in the Lok Sabha tomorrow while the Rajya Sabha will have the debate next week.

A consensus resolution,to be moved in both the Houses,has also been worked out. It reads — “Despite repeated discussions on price rise in the House,the burden of price rise on the common man is continuing. Expressing deep concern over price rise,this House calls upon the government to take immediate effective steps to check inflation that will give relief to the common man.”

The Opposition had earlier insisted that the resolution should read as — “government has continued to increase the burden of price rise on the common man” and that the “House condemns the insensitivity of this government” on price rise.

The discussion will start at 1200 hours,soon after the Question Hour. Senior BJP leader and former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha and JD(U) President Sharad Yadav will move the resolution on behalf of their respective parties,Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj said.

Sinha will open the debate and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will reply to it,Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal told reporters.

Besides,Sinha and Yadav,K S Rao of Congress has also given notice for such a discussion.

The same resolution will be moved in the Rajya Sabha next week and will be followed by a debate and voting (under Rule 167). BJP MP Prakash Javadekar will move the resolution on behalf of his party.
