Taking strong action against street crimes targeting Indians, an Australian court on Wednesday handed out long jail terms to three attackers of a prominent Indian origin doctor, who was hit with a baseball bat by one of the assailants as if he was "hitting a six at cricket".

Victoria's Haikerwal State County Court Judge Joe Gullaci jailed 20-year-old Alfer Azzopardi, who bashed Mukesh Hairkerwal with serious blows with a baseball bat, for 18-and-a-half years with a minimum of 13-and-a-half years.

Haikerwal, a former chief of Australian Medical Association, was walking through a park in the bayside suburb of Williamstown on September 27 last year when he was bashed by the men.

The court was told that Haikerwal's skull was heard to crack after Azzopardi took a swing like he was "hitting a six at cricket", causing a severe head injury to the doctor.

Another co-accused Michael Baltatzis, 20, of Glenroy, who together with Azzopardi took part in 23 armed robberies over a two-month period, was jailed for 16-and-a-half years and must serve 10-and-a-half years before being eligible for parole.

A third man, Sean Gabriel, 20, of Hoppers Crossing, was jailed for nine years and nine months with a minimum of six years, AAP reported.

Announcing the sentences, Judge Gullaci dubbed the attacks as "cowardly and despicable".

"Each of the victims was selected at random, but each had a common feature, that is they were vulnerable and alone and in parks or (other) public places," the judge said.

"To be honest, I didn't expect to get a verdict like this," said Haikerwal, who was not in court for the sentences.

    ... contd.

Long prison sentences will send a message that crimes of this nature will be dealt with severely.By: Yadu Singh | 19-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward This Victorian Judge and Victoria police have done a great job. Thank you to them. Mukesh Haikerwal is known to us and I have met him several times. He was severely bashed in an unprovoked attack. The long prison terms are fully justified. These criminals and losers fully deserve the long time in a prison. Please note that the police investigation, prosecution and sentencing took only about 1 year. This does not happen in many countries. Remember the saying, justice delayed is justice denied.Believe me, Australia does have a good criminal justice system but it can be made better. We live in Australia and will do what we can, to press the Gov authorities for the stiffer punishment for crimes of the nature, Mukesh was subjected to. Prison sentences to 3 attackers of Indian doc By: Juan Carlos d. Autopista | 18-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Haikerwal, found the right words when he said: "I take no comfort that my assailants have been sentenced to jail terms." The bashing was unprovoked and senseless. The Aussie judges are sending the right messages to the mental midgets wanting to do similar harm to other immigrants in their own largely immigrant society.Serves them right.
My Uselless SonBy: Rodgers Father | 18-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward In anyones term this is very heavy sentence. Its deservedly so. However my useless son with 3P's problem with his sidekick will no doubt come with something negative in this sentence. If this was India the case would have been in abayence for next the twenty years. THe cultript would have gone old and probably dead and still nothing would have happened. This proves that the justice system in Australia works.
Good lessonBy: Charanjit | 18-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Also a good lesson for Indian justice system. 90% of these type of cases in India come to nothing.
No body is uselessBy: VJ | 18-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I don't think anyone is born useless, society makes him/her so. In this case, perhaps, the sentence can be drastically curtailed, as these are very young lads. I don't think you are entirely right about Indian Justice system, take Graham staines case, the perpetrators were senteced to life.
Right Once AgainBy: Rodgers Father | 19-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Thank you Rahul for agreeing what I was saying. One should not get just defensive for the sake of it. Indias judical system(including police) has huge problems
Indian criminal justice systemBy: k madhukar | 18-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Dear VJ, Graham's case is an exception which does not prove the rule. Every one knows why it was an exception. One swallow does not make the summer.Mr Roger was dead right about Indian criminal justice system.
long sentanceBy: Jim of OZ | 18-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward In Australia 18 years for a bashing is a very long sentance, many people only get 10 or 15 years for murder, so it looks like the courts are cracking down on the thugs that do these bashings.
Prison term for AUSSIE attacker of Indian DoctorBy: Rajesh Vyas | 18-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Let us earnestly hope that the sentence is indeed carried out and is not a suspended sentence. Let us also hope that the sentence is not drastically reduced.
Are You SeriousBy: Harish Velji - Australia | 18-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I am pleased with very heavy sentence given by the court. I think Rajesh does not understand the legal system. This chap can not be released before thirteen and half years unless he is on good behaviour. Thirteen and half years sentence in anyones term is also very long. Because this is a high profile case he will find very difficult to be released. I hope same type of sentences are delivered to all the criminals who perform the similar type of crimes. No excemtions.
