Loser’s burden

  • As the first electoral exercise after the Lok Sabha verdict, these assembly election results gain an especially national context. For the BJP, in a spiral of denial since its May defeat, they come as a reminder that postponing a stock-taking will not stop the wreckage from piling up. The BJP will perhaps wonder what may have been had it persisted with its earlier seat-adjustment with the INLD in Haryana. In Maharashtra it has gamely conceded defeat. But it needs to do a lot more to show itself worthy of the opposition space it occupies, especially in Maharashtra and at the national level.

The BJP’s Maharashtra leadership is already rationalising the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance’s third successive defeat to the Congress-NCP combine by arguing that Raj Thackeray’s votes were really theirs. This is disingenuous and lazy. In a first-past-the-post system, pointing to fragmentation of the vote can hardly be consolation. But the Thackeray factor is certainly at the heart of the BJP’s troubles in Maharashtra. It is not that Thackeray was threatening to garner substantial vote away from the BJP-Sena combine, especially in what used to be their urban stronghold. It is that the party failed to articulate a political response to his hyper-chauvinism. It was certainly a chauvinism inspired by the Sena’s familiar rhetoric. But the challenge for the BJP, as a national party, was to craft a positive agenda to present itself as an alternative to both the ruling coalition and to the challenger-come-lately. As seen from its feeble statements and its manifesto, it chose to play Thackeray-lite — and even alarmed its coalition partner in Bihar, the JD(U) — with talk of work permits for migrants.

Loser's burdenBy: Surjeet | 24-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Having a healthy opposition is a national responsibility. We have seen in the past what had happened when Congress was ruling strong.History must not repeat. BJP's downfall has happened because of several reasons. One, Congress miticulously wanting to ruin opposwition by any which way it can. Two, Press...no support. I remember in the time of Bajpayee what had happened when the price of onions went up!We need to support the one and only meaningful opposition that we have; if not the loss is ours.Congress cqan cause havoc; why should we wait for it. We should treat(BOTH PEOPLE AND PRESS) Congress and BJP alike, that is to say, with patience and tolerance because if nothing it is the only opposition that will keep congress in check.
a woinning candidate shoudl have majority of votes polled (50% ) in a real democracy.By: Vasu | 24-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward There is something totally wrong with India's electoral process. How can any party/group which commands a fraction of total votes and less than 50% of votes polled can said to have a mandate? Election commission should strikeout all who don't vote twice in successive elections. And voter registration should form the basis of all kinds of identity/govt. perks. Next until a candidate gets majority of vote (50% ) there should be a runoff between top two candidates. In terms of real mandate, except for Modi of Gujarat and Patnaik of Orissa no other govt. in India has real mandate of people.Requirement of real mandate (50% ) eliminates all kinds of divisive/casteist groups from influincing the final outcome. Otherwise you will not be seeing Congress in Maharastra, AP or DMK in TN ruling with opposition parties getting majority of votes! This kind of reform is very difficult as it mainly affects congress and its corrupt parivar and western funded media wants Sonia to rule forever!
how to make BJP stongerBy: k k gupta | 23-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward I feel it is the responsibity of the main opposition party to offer itself as an alternative to ruling party. The following may help: 1. Put a senoir MP/ Party functionary to study the working of government in each area / ministry critically. The concerned MP / party functionary has to come out with the obeservation on regular basis. Thus , on alomst daily basis BJP should come out with one strong statement.Be it Finanace, MOPNG, Power ministry, Price rise , Neighbours, etc. List is endless, issues are many. 2. The party has to have its own natinal TV channel as the media otherwise goes with the ruling party.or buy time slots on different channels dedicated to air party's view. 3. Buy space in print media as done by ADAG group ..today almost entire india knows about the gas dispute...4. Party has to be aggressive and appear positive in its discussions.....5. The party should have consensus to put up a united face. In any event personal scores must not be settled in public.
BJP: Opportunity Galore for opposition partyBy: Nitin Mathur | 23-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward If Advani and BJP are serious these can be used as opportunities: 1)Question the 100 day progress promise made by UPA-II. Can BJP submit a report and ask questions. 2) Submit an alternative Education policy doicument which questions Kapil Sibal's hijacking of board and enterance exams.3) Question Govt. on naxal movement with positive suggestions4) Govt. monitoring of Infrastructure projects. 5) Govt.'s China policy. 6) With so many lawyers as members, how about a bill for speedy court trials. 7) Steps taken for improving Power sector reforms.8) What is the progress on Atalji's Golden quadilateral issue. 9)Can BJP question the Govt. on what it is doing for price Control. 10) Is there any Comprehensive development plan for Jarkhand which Yashwant sinha can articulate. The real question is do we have the intention. Can BJP not tie up with any TV channel and come up with 20 min programme every week. Be a reponsible alternative. Does Advani, Leader of opposition in Parliament really care?
Mixing of religion and politics have failed...By: Nautankee | 23-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward We Indians do need a strong opposition, but we certainly do not need hate spreaders in our Hindu name.I believe, we the voters have correctly voted the communal forces out of office. While in opposition, the BJP never behaved like a opposition party, but pointed fingers at Borfors like failed cases. The ghost of Gujarat has come to haunt them nationally and internationally.
