The Tamil Tigers' air wing set a power station ablaze in the Sri Lankan capital and hit an army base on Tuesday in separate air raids, the military said.

The bombing runs were the eighth and ninth raids by the Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam's (LTTE) ramshackle air force of single-engine propeller-driven planes, which have bedevilled the Sri Lankan military since first striking in March 2007.

Tuesday's first attack hit Thalladi military camp about 250 km (150 miles) north of Colombo in Mannar district, causing minor damage and injuring one soldier, military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said.

Soon after, radar picked up an unidentified aircraft heading south over the Indian Ocean towards Colombo. The city was plunged into darkness after power was switched off as a precaution, jets were scrambled and air defences activated.

"At around 1130 (1800 GMT), an LTTE light aircraft came into Colombo and dropped bombs at Kelanitissa power station. Anti-aircraft guns were activated. There is some fire in the area and firefighters have been sent there," Nanayakkara said.

Shortly after the lights went out, the sound of anti-aircraft guns thundered from Colombo's shoreline, and people stood in the streets to watch.

Nanayakkara said it was not clear whether the raids were carried out by one plane or two.

    LONG CONFLICT

The rebels are locked in heavy fighting with the military in northern Sri Lanka, where the government is confident it will defeat a foe its has battled since 1983 in one of Asia'a longest-running insurgencies.

The military has stepped up its offensive in the last three months and says it is within striking distance of the rebel capital Kilinochchi. It says it has steadily seized one LTTE stronghold after another as it marches north.

India fighting a dirty war for the ungrateful singhalease By: Rajendran | 29-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward The strategic interests and benefits to India is not important for the anti tamil external affairs policy makers. All they want is to provide men, material, technology and intelligence which are the key eliments to win a war in the modern world. But still for all these years, they are struggling to defeat them. The only solution at the end is going to be a seperate country for Srilankan tamil people. India could have avoided it by settling the problem with self determination for the tamileans in Srilanka.
India in Ealam/Ceylon and Srilanka/CeylonBy: Ezhu Naga | 29-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward There are only two communities living apart from name sake communities. The majoritarianism has suppressed the voice of the minority Tamils for decades and the untold sufferings they are undergoing as Tamil Community and their defencive actions are all interpreted as Terrorist Act by the majoritarian Singhalese and India with the lame excuse of respecting sovereignty of a neighbouring nation is bleeding the Tamils of island. The Congress Government due to its idolatory politics does not want to antagonise the Sonia Gandhi family whose thirst for Tamils blood has not satisfied. The only viable option for India if it does want to allay its fears of separatist tendencies in its own soil is to invade Srilanka, bifurcate it and keep both the land unders its control with a viable treaty. Thus India can gain its supremacy in this region. The current handling will in the long run dismember even India, this is for sure.
those poor terrorists.. my heart bleeds!!By: madhurima | 29-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward You actually expect sympathy for suicide bombing killers? Thanks to your "Supressed" Tamil brethren, Sonia is a widow today. The LTTE is living in La la land if it thinks that India will ever have anything to do with its PM's murderers. In fact, the LTTE seems to have tons of money and power if they can afford an air force, so I don't buy the "untold sufferings of Tamils" argument. India has enough problems of its own to meddle in your affairs
