Governor BL Joshi admires a photograph: some of paintings exhibited.

Exhibition aiming at sensitising the present about the pluralistic cultural legacy of Lucknow was inaugurated by Governor BL Joshi on Wednesday.

An initiative of Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage (INTACH), the show saw works of veteran and upcoming talent displayed at Rashtriya Lalit Kala Academi.

Tracing Lucknow’s history -through paintings, sculptors and photographs, the exhibition highlighted the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb of Oudh.

“Anything and everything that talks of Lucknow’s richness —monuments, kathak, chikankari, Bada Mangal, old city - have been

included as themes of the show,” says Vipul Varshney, co-convener Lucknow chapter, INTACH.

While aesthetically pleasing painting of Muzaffar Ali was the star attraction, some 200-year-old pictures by Raja Jahangirabad also attracted attention of the visitors.

Who’s who from the city of Nawabs present on the occasion were led by none other than Nawab Mir Jafar Abdullah.

Historian Yogesh Pravin, IAS Alok Ranjan, Jayant Krishna, OP Agrawal, Sharad Pandey, Arun Kant, etc also graced the occasion.

“Set up in 1984 by former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, INTACH is celebrating 25 years of exemplary work in the field of heritage conservation in India and spreading awareness is perhaps the best way to celebrate silver jubilee,” says Varshney.

The exhibition will be on till August 30 while a musical presentation by Zarina Begum, pupil of Begum Akhtar on the same evening will mark the culmination of the celebrations, says Varshney.
