Lucknow Echoes Delhi warcry against rape

A group of about 100 people, most of them from Aam Aadmi Party, and young students, on Sunday held sit-ins outside the Chief Minister's residence and Raj Bhavan to lodge their protest against the gangrape of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi and demanded stricter punishment for rapists and better security for women at public places.

The group, which gathered in Hazratganj area near the General Post Office, started to march towards Raj Bhavan around 2 pm and staged a sit-in outside Raj Bhavan demanding to meet Governor B L Joshi.

According to police, many of them tried to block roads by stopping vehicles outside Raj Bhavan. However, as the Governor did not meet them, they handed over a memorandum to his staff and started a march towards the chief minister's residence on Kalidas Marg. They were stopped at the roundabout by police before they could enter Kalidas Marg. Although the protesters wanted to meet Akhilesh Yadav, the administration officials persuaded them to leave and assured them they could meet the CM later. Protesters then reached Vidhan Sabha.
