Having made a clean sweep of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati made it clear today that she was far from done. “UP jeeta, ab Delhi ke liye tayyar ho jao (We have won UP, now get ready for Delhi),” the BSP supremo told newly elected legislators of the party at a meeting here today.
Remembering the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party and her mentor Kanshi Ram at the Legislative Party meeting, an emotional Mayawati said the Red Fort is her ultimate goal. “Manyawar ne sapna dekha tha Lal Qile par jaane ka aur hamein ye poora karna hai (Kanshi Ram dreamt about speaking from the Red Fort and now we have to fulfil it),” she told MLAs.
As bouquets and congratulations were passed around, Mayawati struck a sober note, telling legislators there was no room for complacence and that the same homework would have to be done for the Lok Sabha elections of 2009. “We are no more a Bahujan Samaj, but a Sarvajan Samaj Party,” she stated.
She praised Satish Chandra Mishra, Brijesh Pathak and Naseemuddin Siddqui for the support of Brahmins and Muslims. “I myself was not so sure about the support from Pandits,” accepted Mayawati, and gave all the credit to Mishra. “Just see, for the first time after Independence, there are 38 Brahmins and 21 Muslims from a single party in the Assembly. Only the BSP could do this magic.” Reeling out the names of the victorious Brahmins and Muslims, she expressed confidence that the combination would work in the Lok Sabha elections also.
