Lucknow scientists identify Sukhna lake mystery weed

The UT Administration has already begun complying with the suggestions made by the National Hydrology Institute,Roorkee who had formed a detailed report recently on the steps to conserving Sukhna Lake.

“ We are in fact talking many well known and experts institutes of the country to ensure that this year,we do more than what we did last year to conserve Sukhna Lake” said UT home secretary,Ram Niwas.

The same scientists have already identified the weed and we are hoping they would be able to make a detailed plant and to how to get rid of the same “,said Ram Niwas. As of now,with the decline in water level,Sukhna Lake presents a green picture owing to a large-scale growth of the weed.

The menace not only presents a poor picture of one of the main attractions of the city,it also proves as hindrance to water sports and boating in the lake.

Potamogeton crispus is found in freshwater lakes,ponds,rivers and streams,and in slightly brackish waters. It is tolerant of low light,low water temperatures,and is a species of alkaline or nutrient-rich waters. P. crispus will invade shallow as well as deep water areas. The weed can grow in dense beds which outcompete native aquatic plants.
