The mystery of the Sukhna Lakes mysterious incorrigible weed has finally been solved. The weed has been identified as Potamogeton crispus commonly known as curly leaf pond weed, found in alkaline and high nutrient water. The weed was identified by scientists of the National botanical Research Institute,(NBRI),Lucknow. In fact, for the past year and a half, the UT Administration had done its best to ensure that the lake could be de-weeded and had toyed with all possibilities including hiring the workers are responsible for cleaning the lake around the Jalmahal in Jaipur.
All efforts were in vain, however,as the weed made a comeback again this year. Now,the authorities have roped in scientists from NBRI,Lucknow who will be visiting the city on June 23 to physically verify the situation.
The UT Administration has already begun complying with the suggestions made by the National Hydrology Institute,Roorkee who had formed a detailed report recently on the steps to conserving Sukhna Lake.
We are in fact talking many well known and experts institutes of the country to ensure that this year,we do more than what we did last year to conserve Sukhna Lake said UT home secretary,Ram Niwas.
The same scientists have already identified the weed and we are hoping they would be able to make a detailed plant and to how to get rid of the same ,said Ram Niwas. As of now, with the decline in water level,Sukhna Lake presents a green picture owing to a large-scale growth of the weed.
The menace not only presents a poor picture of one of the main attractions of the city,it also proves as hindrance to water sports and boating in the lake.
Potamogeton crispus is found in freshwater lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, and in slightly brackish waters. It is tolerant of low light, low water temperatures, and is a species of alkaline or nutrient-rich waters. P. crispus will invade shallow as well as deep water areas. The weed can grow in dense beds which outcompete native aquatic plants.
