  • A Ludhiana-based couple was arrested on Wednesday for robbing an elderly woman in Sector 30 two days ago. The police have booked three persons in the case, who allegedly barged into the house of the woman and robbed her in order to pay their house rent, the police said.

The trio allegedly entered the house of Gurdev Kaur and gagged her to rob her ornaments.

The woman, however, raised an alarm and the accused fled with whatever they could lay their hands on. Kaur later identified one of the accused as Sukhjit Singh of Ludhiana, who used to come to the locality to visit his uncle, and informed the police.

The police nabbed 26-year-Sukhjit and his wife 33-year-old Ummal Wara alias Simran near the cremation ground in Industrial Area. Sukhjit named the third accused as Monu of Manimajra, who is still absconding, the police said.

The police claimed Sukhjit was disowned by his family in Manimajra after he married a Muslim woman. A case of robbery, trespassing and common intension had been registered and the stolen earrings were recovered from the couple.
