The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM), Kolkata, on Wednesday remanded Mohd. Omar Madni, suspected linkman of Lashkar-e-Toiba, in police custody till July 15.
Madni alias Mazahar was wanted by Kolkata police for his involvement in a case of fake currency.
Public Prosecutor Krishna Chandra Das pleaded that the Burtolla police had recovered fake notes of face value of Rs 60,000 and arrested four persons on May 7, 2009.
The police came to know about the involvement of Madni after interrogating Mohijur Rehman, Toffazal Hossain and Asit Sarkar.
Das pleaded for police remand for investigation purpose. Madni was brought here on Tuesday night on a transit remand from New Delhi by the Kolkata Police’s Special Task Force (STF) to face charges here.
Deputy Commissioner (STF) B Baidya said: “From the information we have gathered, Madni’s main task was to recruit new operatives for LeT. He has recruited over 30 such operatives from different parts of the country.”
“He was also given the task of creating LeT sleeper cells in metro cities and fund them. As of now we don’t have information on any sleeper cell in the city. We are interrogating him on this,” Baidya added.
He said Madni had come to Birbhum district around a year ago via Jharkhand. “He received his training in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan in 1988. Since then he has traveled thrice to Pakistan in 1997-98 and in 2008. He also travelled thrice to Bangladesh in 2007-08,” he added.
