  • After making Tamil compulsory in schools up to class V, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has now promised to take steps to introduce legal proceedings in Tamil in the Madras High Court.

Section 348 (2) of the Constitution permits legal proceedings in mother tongue or the language of the state. "We will take appropriate steps to get presidential approval for it,'' Karunanidhi said, adding that judges from outside the state could use English.

He would also ensure that the various Acts and Laws are translated into Tamil to facilitate the proceedings in the High Court.

Recently, the DMK government passed a legislation to introduce Tamil medium up to class V in schools in the state. It also takes pride in its achievement in getting temples in the state to perform 'archanas' in Tamil.
