BJP leader and senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani said Monday if no one contested a second term for Nitin Gadkari as BJP president, he would.
Jethmalani has been opposing Gadkari ever since charges of corruption against the BJP chief surfaced in relation to transactions linked to his Purti Group. He quit the BJP national executive soon after.
On Sunday, BJP set January 23 as the date for filing nominations for the post of party president. The date for the election will be announced after withdrawal of nominations the same day.
Jethmalani said he did not want Gadkari to get elected unopposed and would withdraw his nomination the moment another person joins fray.
"To contest the election, I need support of at least 20 active party members from five states, which I do have at the moment. I do not want the election to end in unopposed victory," he said.
