The UT Architecture department has given a nod to the Mahila Bhawan proposed to be constructed by the Municipal Corporation in Sector 38.
The estimate for its construction would be discussed in the House meet later this month.
The proposal for the Mahila Bhawan was floated two years ago during former mayor Harjinder Kaur’s tenure.
It was proposed that an auditorium, exhibition hall and a seminar room be made on the premises.
Last year, however, it was decided to have rooms where single women, who come on a short visit to the city, can stay, along with additional security.
The deadline for construction had been fixed for September this year but the proposal was awaiting clearance from the architecture department.
The Mahila Bhawan would also have facilities for vocational courses including cutting and tailoring, computer education, beauty, knitting and stitching.
The estimated cost of construction in the annual budget was given as Rs 10 crore of which Rs 4.50 crore have been earmarked to be spent in 2009-10.
Mayor Kamlesh said the aim of starting the Mahila Bhawan is to provide all possible facilities for women under one roof.
“There is no such facility available in the city. The centre would benefit a large number of women. Since the architecture department clearance has been received, estimates are being prepared. The agenda will be taken up for discussion in the House,” she said.
