The police have booked BJP MLA Asharani for abetment to suicide, and her husband Ashok Vir Vikram Singh alias Bhaiyya Raja for the alleged rape and torture of their maid who had committed suicide nearly 32 months ago.
Singh is already in police custody in connection with the murder of his grandniece Vasundhara Bundela,a student of fashion designing, whose body was found on Bhopals outskirts on December 11.
While investigating Bundelas sensational murder the police learnt that there was more to the death of 37-year-old Tijibai who had set herself ablaze on the roof of the couples bungalow on Kolar Road in May 2007. The police had almost closed the case by taking Singh familys version that the unmarried maid was like a family member and that she ended her life for some unknown reason.
However, while interrogating the employees and other family members of Bhaiyya Raja, the police found that the maid was driven to committing suicide allegedly because he was sexually exploiting her and that she was being forced to live their against her wishes. Tijibai was not allowed to venture out,and not allowed to meet her relatives.
Even Vasundharas parents had accused the former legislator of making sexual advances at his grandniece saying she moved to Bhopal from Chhatarpur two years ago to escape his attention.
While investigating Vasundharas murder we found that there was a foul play in the maids death. Once we have sufficient evidence we will make arrests, Bhopal SP Yogesh Chaudhary told The Indian Express.
Besides the couple, the police have booked six others, including their driver Khwaja,in connection with the maids suicide charging them with rape, illegal confinement, torture, abduction and abetment to suicide.
Asharani,an MLA from Bijawar, had defended her 60-year-old husband in the Vasundhara case blaming BJP leaders from Chhatarpur and Panna for the case, and accusing the police of being biased.
