Majha politics takes new turns after Capt,Manpreet’s show of strength

The politically volatile region of Majha is witnessing new dimensions on its political canvass following much-hyped show of strengths.

Ruling SAD feels heat of opposition; both plan to hold mass contact programmes

The politically volatile region of Majha is witnessing new dimensions on its political canvass following much-hyped show of strengths by state Congress head Captain Amarinder Singh and expelled Akali leader Manpreet Singh Badal, last week. The alignments and re-alignments in the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and opposition Congress are setting fresh challenges for both political players, eying next assembly elections due in one and half year.

While ruling party leaders feel the heat of rebel factor strengthening after Manpreet and Captain taking them head on,the Congress, too,is finding new groups emerging. The changing equations are all set to force two parties for further brain storming in the coming days as they prepare to launch more mass-contact programs against each other in the region.

Just days ahead of Captain’s visit, his close associates, led by former MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa,Harpartap Singh Ajnala,Ashwani Shekhri and Triptinder Bajwa organised a major rally in Gurdaspur district. None of these leaders see an eye to eye with sitting Lok Sabha MP Partap Singh Bajwa whose differences with Captain are out in the open now. Bajwa’s conspicuous absence during Captain’s mega show was pointing to the differences between them reaching new high. On the other hand sitting MLA of Beas,Manjinder Singh Kang, who is supporting the Manpreet has given scant regard to party’s showcause notice and has given no reply to it as deadline ends today. His cocking a snook to party’s authorities has further fanned the resentments within the party and disgruntled elements including Manmohan Singh Gumtala and Subegh Singh Ajnala and Avtar Singh are coming in the open to raise the banner of revolt.

The more low-rung leaders of the ruling party in three districts of Amritsar,Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran are lining up with Manpreet and Kang is emerging his main field man. The differences amongst senior party leaders including ministers Ranjit Singh Brahampura,Adesh Partap Singh Kairon,Sucha Singh Langah and Sewa Singh Sekhwan are also turning eye sores. The emergence of Bikram Singh Majithia as a strong man, being from Badal family,is giving many a heartburn too. In Congress many leaders who had switched their loyalities to Captain’s bete noire Rajinder Kaur Bhattal are now bending backwards to shake hands with the Captain who has emerged all time stronger after his elevation as Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee (PPCC) Chief.

“We will be launching a major mass contact programs in the coming days in Majha. We will take this government to task for its failures on all fronts”,said former Congress MLA from Beas and a Captain loyalist,Jasbir Singh Dimpa.

Former MP and senior Congress leader Rana Gurjit Singh who had developed differences with Captain after he lost the last parliamentary election from Tarn Taran is turning biggest ally of Captain along with MLAs O P Soni and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria.

Former Congress ministers Gurchet Bhullar,Sardul Singh who had been keeping distance from the Captain earlier are now vying for his attention. “The party is all united and all allies with senior party leadership. The differences between Bajwa and Captain will be sorted out”,said an insider requesting anonymity.

Majitha MLA Bikram Singh Majithia said the party has no threat from any where to its unity or onslaught of Captain or Manpreet. He said Kang has personal problems, forcing him to align with Manpreet as his home constituency Beas has been eliminated in the delimitation commission. “We have no threat from anybody be it Captain or Manpreet. Our development agenda is before the people and the party is united as ever,” he claimed.
