The Punjab Congress,under its new chief Partap Singh Bajwa,is in a combative mood for the budget session of the Vidhan Sabha beginning here (Monday) March 11. Bajwa told media Sunday that he personally thought that the Akalis needed to be cornered on the abuses hurled by cabinet minister Bilkram Majithia during the last session for which no action has been taken against him.

Bajwa said he will meet party leaders and draw a combative strategy for the session. The issue is not dead. The party has not been given its due by the Speaker. Till justice is done we will not allow the session to run. This is my personal feeling. But a final decision on what we will be doing in the Vidhan Sabha will be taken in the CLP meeting, he added.

Bajwa,the Gurdaspur MP,added that he might attend the proceedings of the house sitting in the visitors gallery.

Earlier,after an all party meeting on Friday,a three member committee comprising Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal,Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar was constituted to ensure uninterrupted functioning of the House. The speaker claimed to have heard no abuses at all but went on to expunge them, added Bajwa.

Congress leaders have also geared up to put the treasury benches on the mat over the police thrashing of a young woman in Tarn Taran. The television footage of the episode was aired nationally but DGP Sumedh Saini told media that he had not seen the clipping. The Supreme Court had suo motu taken note of the event and issued notices to the state.

The budget session is also likely to be stormy on account of non-payment of salaries to staff . The cash-strapped state has over drawn Rs 2,000 crore in February. The re-induction of Gulzar Singh Ranike into the cabinet is also likely to be criticised by the opposition.
