Rana Gurjit Singh was repeatedly accused of nurturing only his wife’s Vidhan Sabha constituency, Kapurthala, which is one of the nine Assembly segments in this Lok Sabha seat. Also accused of being inaccessible, he is not contesting this time as the constituency has been reserved.
PROMISES GALORE: He promised improvement in the living standard of farmers, accountability in governance, good educational institutes for the area, a sugar mill, job opportunities, major industrial projects, besides a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for the region.
WHAT HE DELIVERED: He was accused of focusing on only one of the nine Assembly segments in the Jalandhar Parliamentary constituency, Kapurthala, which is represented by his wife Raj Bans Kaur. He spent about Rs 3 crore for laying storm drains, sewerage system, construction of roads, providing drinking water, installing tubewells, construction of dharmsahalas, providing computers to colleges; all in Kapurthala. He got some developmental works done in Sultanpur Lodhi Assembly segment, too. On the remaining seven Assembly segments, he spent Rs 1.5 crore, as per the latest figures available.
WHERE HE FAILED: Despite the Congress-led UPA being at the Centre, Rana could not bring any major industrial project, the promised SEZ, educational institute or sugar mill to the constituency. In Jalandhar, even civic works were blatantly ignored.
ATTENDANCE IN LOK SABHA: His attendance was 70.8 per cent
NUMBER OF QUESTIONS ASKED OR ISSUES TAKEN UP: Asked only 10 questions, related to the airport in Jalandhar, package to farmers, relaxation to industry, farmers’ suicides, development of Pushpa Gujral Science City, four-laning of the Jalandhar-Amritsar National Highway.
