Maken admits ‘loopholes’ in BRT pilot

Union Minister and sitting MP from New Delhi constituency Ajay Maken on Tuesday admitted “loopholes” in the controversial Bus Rapid Transit pilot project but said the city needs such corridors to streamline traffic.

Union Minister and sitting MP from New Delhi constituency Ajay Maken on Tuesday admitted “loopholes” in the controversial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) pilot project but said the city needs such corridors to streamline traffic.

But Maken added that he hoped all “glitches” found in the first corridor — from Ambedkar Nagar to Delhi Gate — would be removed in future projects. He also suggested improvements in the future corridors, like increasing the number of foot over-bridges near the bus stops and making traffic “red-light free” for other vehicles.

He said that there should be enough parking space around the BRT corridor, and criticised physical segregation of vehicles on the corridor. “Doors of low-floor buses plying on the existing corridor should be on the right side as bus stops are in the middle of the roads,” he said.

With the BJP making the BRT fiasco an election issue,Maken said,“Most BJP-ruled states are implementing the BRT plan, which is being promoted by the Urban Development Ministry. The BJP has no right to rake it up as an issue against the Congress in Delhi.”

Meanwhile, nine days before polling in the Capital,Maken today launched a website listing out his achievements over the last five years. The website also contains 195 pictures of his visits to the constituency — a reaction to Vijay Goel’s barbs that he has been inaccessible to the voters.
