The myth about 21.12.2012 being the doomsday might have created a scare among many, there are others who are encashing it. Gift shops are selling doomsday memorabilia and mobile applications have been created to mark the day.
The idea of making money out of this myth hit Gaurav, a project manager at Infosys, nearly 10 days back. "I have been making applications for android phones for some time. I keep thinking of ideas where I can make the most profit out of the apps which I develop. The idea struck me a few days back that making an app for doomsday can be good."
Gaurav has made a live wallpaper app in addition to many other apps available in the android stores with a user name 'applicity'. He has developed the app for doomsday with a collection of some wall papers. The app says, "The world ends 21.12.12 according to Mayan Calendar. Is your phone dressed for it?"
The app has been installed maximum by people in the United States of America and the Indian population is the number two on the list. "Today is the day when I will be making the most profit," says Gaurav.
Abhishek Sahoonja, owner of Dewsun Store, Sector 11, too used the concept of doomsday to make profits. He had got made coffee mugs customised with designs like "21.12.12, End of the world is near" and "I survived Doomsday". The mugs have been on sale for a week on all the Dewsun stores and a kiosk at the DT mall.
"I had been reading about the craze of doomsday merchandise among people in other countries. Even in the metropolitan cities and on Facebook, it has been quite popular. There are youngsters and teenagers in the city who know about the concept and they are the ones who have bought the coffee mugs," says Abhishek.
