In a shift from its earlier position,Malaysia has conveyed its support for Indias bid for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council. Sources said visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Abdul Razak communicated this to the Indian leadership.

Malaysia was earlier a member of the group which was opposing Indias bid for a permanent seat at the UNSC. The group Uniting for Consensus,is also called the Coffee Club. It has Pakistan,South Korea,Italy,Argentina,Costa Rica,Malta,Mexico,Spain and Turkey as members.

Razak,on a five-day visit to India,met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday. The Ministry of External Affairs said the two prime ministers decided on cooperating at the United Nations and other international organisations,including cooperation for the early realisation of comprehensive UN reform,including the Security Council,through expansion of permanent and non-permanent categories reflecting the contemporary realities. The joint statement said both countries are focussed on adding substance to bilateral relations,taking into account development and emerging opportunities from the economic crisis.
