Malerkotla calm after Kasab hanging; was guilty so had to be punished, say residents

"After the attacks, I had gone to Mumbai to condole the deaths of innocent people. At that time, all had said that Muslims will never provide a place for Kasab in the graveyard after his death and it is good that he had been buried in the Pune jail itself," said Mufti Faizal Ur-Rehman, a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board said. "He was guilty and has been punished for his deeds and it is a lesson for others as well," he added.

Mohammad Tariq, an employee in HDFC, Malerkotla branch, said: " We found out about the execution in the afternoon but the masses have not reacted at all. I went to the Masjid to offer namaz and even went to the market. Everyone hailed this step."

"Though police took extra security measures, but we too are part of this country and we are totally support the step," he added. Khalid Parwej, another businessman, said: "It took the government four years to hang the man who had killed many. It should have happened much earlier."

SSP (Sangrur) H S Bhullar said that extra force was deployed not only in Malerkotla but in entire Sangrur. "No untoward incident happened, but we had to take extra precautionary measures," he added.

Hanging won't affect Sarabjit case: lawyer

Amritsar, Jalandhar: Awais Sheikh, the lawyer of Sarabjit Singh, who is on a death row in Pakistan after being convicted of serial blasts , said Kasab's hanging was not going to impact his client's case. "The two are entirely different cases. In Kasab's case, you have videos of him committing the crime. Also, in a Pakistani court, it has been submitted that he got training from Pakistan and went to India to carry out terror strikes. Sarabjit's case is of mistaken identity and he has already spent more than two decades in jail," Sheikh added.

Meanwhile, Dal Khalsa leader Kanwar Pal Singh on Wednesday said that the Centre's decision has put Sarabjit's life in jeopardy.
