While Chief Minister Narendra Modi may be on a mission to open at least one medical college in each district of Gujarat, the municipal corporation here is experimenting on the health of children by administering them homeopathy drugs to fight malnourishment in a short duration.
At the end of 16 health check-up camps in the city where around 20,000 persons, including around 5,000 children, were checked up last month,it was found that around 700 children suffered from undernourishment and needed special attention.
These children were administered homeopathy drugs and were asked to report back to doctors after a month.
At a meeting of allopathic doctors and civic officials last week, the former were reportedly told to monitor the progress among the children and repeat the dosages,if needed.
Deputy municipal commissioner (health) I K Patel argued that homeopathy was an effective system to treat undernourishment but was to quick to add it was not his idea to give homeopathic drugs to treat children with malnourishment.
Mayor Asit Vora said children were being given homeopathy drugs since they liked its sweet taste.
