  • Of the 12 occasions on which the Union Cabinet has met since the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) returned to power, Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee has attended just five.

In choosing to absent herself from the latest meeting of the country’s highest executive decision making body on September 10, Banerjee not only worsened her attendance record further, but also ensured that her ministry’s proposal seeking a Rs 17,700 crore Japanese loan to fund Indian Railways flagship project—the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, could not be taken up.

The last Cabinet meeting Banerjee attended was on August 27. In fact, after the July 23 Cabinet meeting where Banerjee was said to have almost walked out opposing the Land Acquisition Bill, she skipped three consecutive Cabinet meetings—on August 6, 13 and 20.

But for the fact that the Cabinet did not meet thrice—on July 9, 16 and 30, Banerjee’s attendance record would have been much poorer.

While her spending more time in Kolkata than in Delhi is one of the main reasons behind her poor attendance in the Cabinet, there has been at least one instance, on August 6, when she did not attend the Cabinet meeting despite being in Delhi. Off the record, her close aides in Rail Bhavan have been trying to defend Didi’s absence arguing that it was due to the fact that no railways related matter was slated for the Cabinet’s approval. But on September 10 Banerjee failed to turn up for the Cabinet meeting despite the Japanese loan for DFC listed on the agenda.

Mamata is the Curse for BengalBy: D.Bose | 18-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Mamata Banerjee is uneducated, filthy, disgusting creature, so that nobody married her. Her life is nothing but to create trouble, provoke her followers, who are just thugs, to kill people, beat up political opponents and destroy all prospects for West Bengal.I sincerely hope, she will die soon by snake bite or malaria or pig flu. Then this curse from Bengal will be removed.
Mamata missed 7 out of 12 cabinet meetingsBy: Abir Ghosh | 15-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward A ministers occupy the chair through politics but he / she should not do only politics while in chair. He / she should be unbiased, humble and should work for the nation. Mamata Bannerjee is doing some unplanned work for bengal. Her aim is to occupy state in the nex state election. People of Bengal neither want to be privileged nor deprived in an isolated way. We want Dr. manmohan Singh should give string message to his minster and ask her to mind her business properly. If she wants to oppose present bengal Govt., she should quit railway ministry and do politics in Bengal.
Sr.CitizenBy: K.Rangasamy | 14-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward I wonder at such inactive ministers. Can any body justify such absence.Where we are leading?Even in the past this was the story. Then why she can not choose other minstry in which her absence will not affect the smooth fuctioning.During LALU's time he was attracting all news channels and now it is just reverse.Bengal people should think serious about this particular self centred leader.

regional thought with national responsibilityBy: ranbahadur | 13-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Mamta 'didi'is a classic example of a regional politician assigned a national level responsibility due to the electoral compulsions. She is also a 'left over' of a waning class of stereotype leaders with no future neither for themselves nor for the people.
