  • With Mamata Banerjee grounding his hopes of becoming the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on Railways for yet another term, CPM’s leader in the Lok Sabha Basudeb Acharia is now eyeing the panel for Coal and Steel. Having made his preference clear, he is hoping to get the green signal from the government. Meanwhile, with Mamata making it clear that she does not want a CPM leader to head the standing committee of her ministry, the Congress is now thinking of keeping the post for itself. Acharia was chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on Railways in 1996, 2004 and 2007.
