Mamata rejects Saugata’s resignation

Roy had resigned as advisor to CM on Wednesday.

The resignation of Saugata Roy as adviser to chief minister on commerce and industries has not been accepted by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has called senior party colleagues for consultation.

Minister for Commerce and Industries Partha Chatterjee on Thursday called Roy "a valued senior colleague with whom I had no differences of opinion". "We value his advice very much," Chatterjee said.

Roy, who was in Delhi on Thursday, spent the whole day in Parliament. He would be back in Kolkata on Friday. "I have nothing to say in this regard. I was in Parliament throughout the day and I received no communication from anybody," Roy told The Indian Express over phone.

Roy, who became the adviser after his party pulled out of the UPA government, tendered his resignation Wednesday following differences with Banerjee and Chatterjee on the issue of a new industrial policy of the government.

Just a few days ago Roy had submitted a draft of the industrial policy to the state government in which he advocated some role of the government in land acquisition, something Banerjee was totally opposed to.

Last week at a seminar he said that setting up of big industries in the state was impossible at this juncture and the state's future lay in small and medium industries.

The differences between Roy and Chatterjee was also on the issue of giving incentives to industrialists. Roy was in favour of giving a bigger amount of incentives than Chatterjee did.
