Even as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave his go-ahead to step up anti-Maoist operations in the country,Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee today called for halting the Centre-state joint operations in Lalgarh.

Even as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave his go-ahead to step up anti-Maoist operations in the country,Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee today called for halting the Centre-state joint operations in Lalgarh.

The Trinamool Congress chief also demanded withdrawal of Section 144 in various Maoist-hit districts.

Dubbing the joint operations as “war on people”,the Trinamool chief said the CPM is the real Maoist in Bengal and added she would urge the Centre to stop the joint operations.

The railway minister said the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly,Partho Chatterjee, will also meet Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi to discuss the issue.

Stating that her party was holding back its agitational programmes due to the Pujas,Banerjee announced a series of protests against the CPM-led state government at a press meet after her party’s core committee meeting in Trinamool Bhavan today. “In the name of joint operations, the CPM-led state government is committing atrocities on tribals. They are capturing the area using force,” she claimed.

“The government has slapped Section 144 in almost all the areas of West Midnapore district. They are robbing the people of right to hold meetings and rallies. Even we are not allowed to hold rallies in Lalgarh. This in a way is throttling the voice of democracy,” she added.

“Mao and Marx have become the same here. CPM cadres are blowing up railway tracks and creating disturbance in the state. The CPM is going on with its murder spree in various districts. Twenty-five to 30 of our supporters were killed since the Pujas,” the railway minister said, adding her party will hit the streets on October 20 to protest against the alleged CPM terror and price hike.
