Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said efforts would be made for early launch of the National Urban Health Mission in the state. She said this while attending a programme in a private city hospital in the city.
Banerjee said she would urge the Centre for early launch of the NUHM in the state as it was the only way to reduce the burden of the government hospitals.
She further said the need-based and city-specific urban health care system can be developed through private- public- partnership model under the NUHM scheme. This can address diverse health needs of urban poor and other vulnerable sections. Besides, once it is launched there is possibility of inter-sectoral coordination and convergence between Jawaharlal Nehru New Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and NUHM, she said. The government had earlier planned to launch NUHM in 2009 but has kept it in abeyance so far. Banerjee asked Sudip Bandopadhyay,Union Minister of State for Health, who was present at the function,to push the Centre for early launch of the mission in the state.
Meanwhile,Banerjee said the government has also planned to set up multi-facility government hospitals at district levels and upgrade the block-level health centers. She said the state would have two more medical college-cum-hospitals by the end of the year.
